We Know What You Did Last Summer: Student Spotlight with Jane Seo ’14

Every intern dreams to make an impact on their company—and this summer, Jane Seo got to make that wish a reality. Working at a mobile app start-up, Jane was able to dig into the inner-workings of this growing organization. I sat down with Jane to talk about the ways in which this experience informed her summer.

JE: What prompted you to apply for this position?

JS: I met the CEO of Bon’App while writing an article for The Harvard Crimson about social entrepreneurship. I have always been interested in how technology can change our everyday habits and lead to social change. Bon’App, which is a smartphone app that encourages people to eat healthier, is a mission-driven company that hopes to reduce obesity in America by educating people about what they eat. I am passionate about healthy eating and nutrition, so I decided to apply to work there.

JE: What did your typical day look like?

JS: I was in charge of maintaining the company’s social media, which includes a blog, Twitter, Facebook page, Pinterest, and Tumblr. I also headed some marketing initiatives to publicize the company to the public and helped with the development of the company. Over the summer, we also launched a fundraising effort on Indiegogo, a crowdfunding platform, where we raised about $8,000 for a research project in Louisiana.

JE: What was your favorite part of your position?

JS: We are located in an accelerator program with nine other start-ups in the healthcare industries, so I loved networking with people and getting to know their businesses. Also, working at a start-up was unique because what I did really contributed to the development of the company and its vision. I loved being challenged every day when I came to work, juggling different responsibilities and projects.

JE: How will the experience inform your future job/career search?

JS: I decided to continue to work throughout the school year (part-time) because I really enjoyed my experience over the summer.
