Have you heard the Mayan myth about the world ending in 2012? Whether that’s true or not, we all know that we need to fix the way we treat our surroundings to prevent environmental changes. The companies attending this Friday’s Energy & Environment Expo are doing just that; focusing on environmental impact and sustainability, these companies are not only ones to admire, but ones that will be shaping the way we consider our future.

Here’s a list of the ten organizations I’m most excited about seeing at the Energy & Environment Expo:

  • Harvest Power
    www.harvestpower.com

    Harvest uses organic materials to produce renewable energy and high value soil, mulch, and organic fertilizer products. Fun fact: Harvest was named one of the CleanTech 100 (Top Global Clean Tech Companies), was designated “Emerging Company of the Year” by New England Clean Energy Council, and received a SBANE 2011 New England Innovation Award.

  • ICF International

    ICF International delivers professional services and technology solutions to government and commercial clients. Fun fact: ICF International reported gross revenue of $765 million in 2010.

  • Andelman and Lelek Engineering

    Andelman and Lelek Engineering is an engineering consulting and design firm that focuses on building energy modeling, energy efficiency consulting, commissioning services, and design of energy efficient HVAC systems. Fun fact: Their staff currently consists of only nine employees: six mechanical engineers and one electrical engineer.

  • SolSolution
    www.sol-solution.org

    SolSolution is a nonprofit aiming to produce clean, renewable electricity and improve education standards in underprivileged schools. Fun fact: In July 2010, Boston-based SolSolution was honored as a finalist in the MassChallenge global startup competition.

  • PeaceCorps

    As a government-run American volunteer program, the Peace Corps has three goals: giving technical assistance, helping those outside the US better understand our culture, and helping Americans understand foreign cultures. Fun fact: Currently, the Peace Corps has served in 139 countries with a cumulative total of over 200,000 volunteers and trainees.

  • Genscape

    Genscape provides energy information for commodity and financial markets. Fun fact: In April 2010, Genscape was voted “Best Place to Work in Kentucky.”

  • Breakthrough Institute

    The Breakthrough Institute is a think thank committed to changing the way people view the environment, energy and other issues. Fun fact: In 2009, the Institute expanded its reach to include national security policy with a focus on counter-terrorism.

  • Global Vision International

    GVI is a volunteer travel organization that places groups and individuals on volunteer projects around the world. Fun fact: Over the last 10 years Global Vision International has successfully placed over 10,000 individuals on overseas programs.

  • U.S. Green Data, Inc.
    usgreendata.com

    USGD uses a database to help private businesses easily find funding or government incentives to help with their environmentally conscious project.
    Fun fact: USGD is based out of Cambridge!

  • Roux Associates
    www.rouxinc.com

    Roux Associates is an environmental consulting firm. Fun fact: Ranked #100 on the Top 200 Environmental Firms in 2010 List by Engineering News Record.
