Here I am, a junior in college, still afloat in a sea of potential career fields and still without a clear direction for my interests. My academic studies and extracurricular involvement at Harvard have been so varied that the path forward isn’t clear. Luckily, the Office of Career Services is equipped with a number of subscriptions to prominent employment journals, including ArtSEARCH from the Theatre Communications Group (THG), which give students an opportunity to explore their options in all kinds of disciplines.

On ArtSEARCH, you can filter job postings according to your interests and needs. For example, let’s say that I want to live at home in Cincinnati following graduation. A quick search reveals that Cincinnati’s “Playhouse in the Park” is hiring acting interns for the 2012-2013 season. Or, perhaps I’m interested in “choral” administration, since I have experience managing the Harvard Glee Club. Another search indicates that Rider University – home to the renowned Westminster Choir College – is looking for a “performance management coordinator” to implement concerts, tours, special events and more. Searches can also be narrowed by job category (e.g. administration, artistic), employment type (e.g. part-time, full time) and salary range.

Plus, beyond ArtSEARCH, the OCS online subscription offers other useful resources, including subscriptions to arts publications (e.g. American Theatre Magazine); a list of available art grants (e.g. “Global Connections” from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation); and data/analysis on the current state of the performing arts in America. I may not be sure of my future career, but ArtSEARCH allows me to get my feet wet and, eventually, to find an interesting and exciting job!
